Why it’s OK to be Imperfect

In a world full of Photoshop, Instagram and high profile influencers, it can be difficult to embrace personal imperfections. When we see strangers living picture perfect lives, we begin to crave that for ourselves. It’s an intimidating feeling and while most of these photos are staged and heavily edited… We still tell ourselves we want to live those lives.

But life isn’t perfect and we shouldn’t be either. So what to do in a world that demands we cover our flaws?

Pinpoint the feeling
It’s important to define why you don’t feel perfect. Maybe you want curly hair instead of straight hair. Maybe you wish you would tan instead of burning. While we can’t change who we are, we can embrace what we have. Find ways to reinvent yourself so that you can grow your confidence instead. Maybe find a new hairstyle to rock or invest in some clothing that highlights your skin tone. It helps to keep in mind that something you have is what someone else might want. There’s a huge trend going around where people are using henna paste to give themselves freckles! If you have those freckles naturally, you should rock them!

Don’t compare yourself to others
As I said before it’s impossible to turn off the forced idea of what we should look like. We should wear this size clothing or wear our hair a certain way. Instead think of what makes you happy. I’m 31 years old. When I search for outfit ideas for my age group I find a ton of outfits I would hate to wear. What I enjoy most is a laid back look with a put together feel. I enjoy hoodies and sneakers and minimal makeup. These are the things I enjoy and you bet your bottom that I rock them!

How can you improve
If you’re hell bent on changing the way you are, think about how to go about it. It’s important to be reasonable with your wants and needs. If you can’t afford to do something like a famous influencer, then don’t go out of your way and put yourself in debt. Do what works for you. Don’t spend money on things you’ll use once because they’re trendy. Invest in what you know you’ll get the most use out of. Take makeup trends for example. One year us ladies were over plucking our eyebrows and the next we’re wearing them thick and bold. Don’t feel pressured into doing something because someone else is. Do it because you want it for yourself.

Don’t let your imperfection hold you back
It’s nice to admire someone for their talents and lifestyle but think about how they got there. For many, they wanted it so much that they worked hard to achieve greatness. It’s important to hold that mentality. If you focus on your flaws and imperfection, you may lose sight of what’s important in life. If you want to be an Instagram model, work on your photography and skills until you make it. But be real about it. Don’t become one of those people who erases their flaws for the camera. Remember that they might also be suffering from the same insecurities that you do. Connect with others instead of appearing to be above them!

Appreciate your individuality
We’re all living on this planet together. That means with over 7 billion people in the world, many of us will share experiences. But that doesn’t mean that we aren’t unique. We’re all different for a reason. It’s because through some small chance and roll of the dice we were born into the bodies we were given. We should embrace our differences and explore the world through our own eyes. Wanting what someone else has may not make you happy in the end. Be who you want to be and not what social media says you should be.
